Neil Newton, or ‘Nella’ as we call him, has spent the last 23 years working within the radio industry across the North West. Born in Aintree, Nella moved to Ainsdale (Burnley Road) at the age of four. School days were spent at St John’s CofE on Sandbrook Road, which you’ll often hear him talk about. From singing in the church choir to wearing a frilly bow tie as an attendant for the village Rose Queen, Nella’s Mum has got lots of embarrassing pictures!
Nella started his radio adventure at the age of 13 commentating on the Grand National for the BBC at Aintree. Southport Hospital Radio at Kew gave him the opportunity to learn his craft, before studying at Southport College. Over the next few years, Stints at the BBC and commercial radio stations across Merseyside and Cheshire followed, including many years here in Southport on the resorts airwaves.
Nella is thrilled to be waking up Southport, the great North West and North Wales, every morning between 7 and 11am. Catch Nella’s column ‘Breakfast Banter’ every Tuesday in the Visiter. You can also watch him on Sky TV Channel 261- TV Cruise Channel, for his brand new programme ‘Cruise Today’. An accomplished compère, you may have been to one of Nella’s ‘Southport’s Got Talent’ shows, seen him host Christmas Light’s switch on’s, the Formby Festival, Your Hero Awards, or just met him at the bar in his favourite pub, the Foghorn!  Nella is also our Station Editor and is in charge of managing our ‘talent’.
